A picture speaks a thousand words. In order to improve your brand visibility, increase sales, and attract new customers you need to make sure you invest in quality food photography. Customers want to taste your food and using good images will help them make decisions when ordering.

If you don’t have the budget for it, don’t worry, below are a few tips and tricks that will help you deliver great photography and make you stand out within the strong competition.

1. Go to the light

Shoot next to a window for natural lighting and make sure you use the same lighting for all your pictures for consistency. Avoid using filters from your phone and let the lighting do the trick, you can always use some adjustments to make sure your photos are bright and colourful.

2. Work with a colour scheme

Shoot dishes that work within your restaurant colour scheme and branding. Choose dishes with warm colours and to keep things bright and fresh, pull on some greens.

3. Work in triangles

If you want to make the most of multiple dishes, shoot items in groups of three creating triangles, they will naturally create a dynamic photo!

4. Use hands in the frame

Adding the human element of a hand within your frame can bring a sense of communal eating. On social media, you can always share or use customers’ photos, but make sure you have asked for permission to use or tag them in the photos.

5. Take away unnecessary clutter

The hero in your photos should be the food, so salt shakers, water glasses etc shouldn’t be part of your photo. Remove items that are unnecessary to your shot and anything that will make it look messy.

6. Use a good quality camera

If you don’t have the budget for a camera, you can definitely use your mobile phone. Make sure you don’t use any filters or different adjustments on each photo. There should be consistency across your photography that will highlight your brand identity.

People eat through their eyes, so it’s a must for restaurants to have good images of their menu items, especially for online menus these days.
